Identify the Safety Precautions Required for Cooking and Water Boiling Using Kelly Kettles, Pans and Other Tools for Boiling Water

Kelly Kettle – A Kelly Kettle heats water quickly using a small fire inside the central chimney.

Safety precautions:

• Place the Kelly Kettle on level, stable ground within the designated fire area.
• Check that the kettle is filled with water before lighting the fire.
• Only dry natural fuel should be used.
• Never look directly down the chimney while the fire is burning.
• Handle the kettle using the designated handle and wear heat-resistant gloves.
• Allow the kettle to cool before refilling or moving it.
• Only the Forest School Leader should remove the Kelly Kettle from the fire and pour the boiling water, unless a competent student is carrying out the task under direct supervision.
• Pour boiling water carefully away from the body and other students.
• Adult supervision is required throughout the activity.

Pans and Cooking Pots – Pans may be placed on a cooking tripod, grill or pan stand over the fire.

Safety precautions:

• Ensure the pan is securely positioned before heating.
• Use heat-resistant gloves when handling hot pans or lifting lids.
• Turn pan handles away from the fire circle to prevent accidental knocks.
• Avoid overfilling pans with water or food.
• Use suitable utensils to remove hot food.
• Allow pans to cool before cleaning or transporting them.
• Only the Forest School Leader should remove pans containing boiling water from the fire, unless a competent student is doing so under direct supervision.
• Adult supervision is required throughout the activity.

Camp Kettles – Camp kettles are designed for boiling water over an open fire.

Safety precautions:

• Fill the kettle with water before placing it on the fire.
• Position the kettle securely on a grill, tripod or pan stand to prevent it from tipping over.
• Ensure the handle is upright and can be accessed safely without reaching over the flames.
• Use heat-resistant gloves when handling or removing the kettle from the fire, as the handle and lid become extremely hot.
• Open the lid carefully, directing any escaping steam away from the face and body.
• Only the Forest School Leader should remove the kettle from the fire and pour the boiling water, unless a competent student is carrying out the task under direct supervision.
• Pour boiling water slowly and carefully into heat-resistant cups or containers.
• Allow the kettle to cool before refilling, cleaning or transporting it.
