Seven-spot Ladybird (Coccinella septempunctata) – Red wing cases with seven black spots.

Natural predator of aphids and an excellent introduction to beneficial insects. Risk: Handle gently and return to its habitat.

Green Shield Bug (Palomena prasina) – Bright green shield-shaped body.

Value: Demonstrates camouflage and adaptation. Risk: May release an unpleasant smell if disturbed.

Buff-tailed Bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) – Large furry bee with yellow bands and a buff-coloured tail.

Value: Excellent pollinator and ideal for discussing the importance of insects. Risk: May sting if threatened or handled.

Common Darter Dragonfly (Sympetrum striolatum) – Slender dragonfly with clear wings; males become red with age.

Value: Introduces pond habitats, predators and insect life cycles. Risk: None; observe without handling.

Speckled Wood Butterfly (Pararge aegeria) – Brown wings with cream and orange markings.

Value: Excellent for discussing camouflage, pollination and life cycles. Risk: None.
